There are essentially three types of mounting options for StruXure pergolas: Free Standing, Ledger and Roof Mount. This guide will help you understand which option is the best fit for your space and what goes into installing a pergola for maximum longevity and maintenance-free use.

All options provide durability to last a lifetime, and the pergola mount chosen depends upon the unique features of your home or space. Read on to see definitions and photos of each style.

The pergola application used depends upon the features of the space. Correct installation is crucial for lifetime enjoyment of a pergola.

Free Standing

This method is just as it sounds, the pergola columns are attached to either frost footers, concrete slab or the surface of a deck. The structural integrity of the pergola does not rely on support from another structure except for the column attachments. In the case of a free-standing deck mount, we typically install 4”x 6” pressure-treated blocking between joists to provide a secure connection and sufficient load distribution.

  • Advantages: Free Standing StruXure pergolas use robust X-base column-connecting brackets. These brackets provide superior support and load distribution, adding to the lateral stability of the entire structure.
  • Disadvantages: This type of installation requires frost footers or a deck with frost protection. Because the structural support comes directly from the columns of the pergola, a minimum of four columns and footers are required.

Ledger Mount

With a ledger mount pergola installation, one or more of the pergola’s structural beams are attached directly to the side of a house or accessory structure. The beam is attached to the studs, headers or other structural components of the host.

  • Advantages: Ledger mounted StruXure pergolas gain at least half of their structural strength from the home or accessory structure, providing excellent lateral stability for the pergola. Because of this, they generally require fewer structural columns and can offer more usable space under the pergola.
  • Disadvantages: There is very little downside to ledger mounting if installed correctly. Careful attention is needed to ensure the integrity of the siding and vapor barrier. Weatherproofing and flashing are required to prevent water incursion to the host structure.

Roof Mount

A Roof mount StruXure pergola installation relies on one or more roof surfaces of the host structure for support. Heavy-duty stainless-steel brackets are attached to the rafters or trusses of the host structure through the shingles, rubber or metal roofing. A durable silicone-based sealant is applied to the brackets to prevent leakage. The brackets can easily be removed and replaced in the event the roof needs to be resurfaced. The pergola beam is suspended above the roof surface so that water can pass below the beam and into the existing gutter on the host structure.

  • Advantages: Roof mounted StruXure pergolas gain at least half of their structural strength from the host structure. Because of this they generally require fewer structural columns/footers and can offer more usable space under the pergola than freestanding pergolas.
  • Disadvantages: There is very little downside to Roof mounting if installed correctly. Careful attention is needed to ensure the integrity of the weatherproofing to prevent leaks. The structural beam of the pergola should be attached directly above the bearing wall of the host structure above the roof. In some cases, such as in homes with deep overhanging eaves, this means the pergola roof will overlap the host structure roof.

Patio Transformation in Rensselaer, NY

This StruXure pergola is a beautiful example of a roof mount. Several design choices were made for maximum durability and a sleek, seamless look:

  • The columns are 8” thick, a style choice we recommend to improve aesthetics
  • The front left corner hangs as a cantilever, to accommodate for the length of the roof
  • Seven-foot helical piles are installed under the back two pillars to secure the pergola to the ground
  • Covers are added to conceal screws at the top of each pillar
